Well, I`ll be Doggone!
16 April 2010

On looking back at Hogey's diary, we have realised that he was born a lucky dog. In Chinese culture the number 8 is a lucky number. On October 8th 2006 Brenda pulled a drowning Hogey from a swollen River Wharfe. On March 8th 2007, he was rescued from his escapades down a badger sett. On November 8th 2007, he was rushed for life-saving surgery after devouring bandages from his injured legs. Not surprising that arthritis exacerbated by back injuries started to take its toll and on May 8th 2008, the vet officially placed Hogey on "borrowed time". Well, Hogey certainly borrowed time, quality time, happy time - time by the fire, time in the sun, time with his family, time being petted, but eventually he gave in on February 8th 2010. Eight days later his ashes were sprinkled all over his favourite walks at Marley Hall.

A charmed life for a charmed dog. This portrait commenced in May 2009 was completed posthumously, though all was finished apart from the whiskers and the tummy spots. The intimacy of the pose is critical in describing the relationship Hogey had with Brenda. It was love at first sight and Brenda always had Hogey by her side when she worked at her desk - so the desk had to be part of the painting. The fire was a focus, as was the way Hogey and Brenda would always sit on the floor for cuddles. Note the characteristic positioning of Hogey's ears when "heavy petting" was available --- slicked back. Notice also an expression reserved exclusively for his dad --- a clear statement of  "Don't interrupt!". This was part of a power struggle which existed only between master and dog. Hogey loved to exert his authority at doorways, on the lead, in the car, and particularly in front of strangers, where embarrasing dad was part of the game. Not surprising therefore, that despite much effort, Hogey never learned to walk to heel. Yet when in need, the unique attachment between master and dog overcame all other obstacles --- Hogey needed his master and loved him in a completely unique way.

Hogey has gone now, but this portrait shows you the wonderful nature of a wonderful dog who was very much loved, and who loved in return. He is not replaceable!!!
