Tribute to Doug Murray
10 January 2010

On BBC Radio Ulster's Jazz Club this evening there was a great tribute to Doug Murray, the Belfast jazz pianist and trombonist. We heard that he started his career in the visual arts, so no wonder he and David Atack hit it off. A common love was jazz and the expression of art.

We heard about a long career in which Doug played with The Ulster Rythm Kings, The White Eagles, and then formed his own band before playing with Wally Fawkes and Alan Barnes and then "kicking it around alone". Brian Dempster provided some great story lines and we look forward to his book with enthusiasm. It is good to know that characters from the art and jazz world can be truly appreciated.

And to those of you wanting prints of "The Jazz Pianist" they should be with you within 14 days. David can provide some super original sketches of Doug if you want to get to the heart of the man who created some great piano music. As Peter Andrews said, the artist is utterly alone, others are engaged in their own chatter--- as can be seen from David's sketches as well as from the final painting - ask if you want to see any of the studies.
