Viewed from higher up the hill, this winter townscape shows the back of the houses on the next street down, and beyond that a London cityscape with the three towers of the Barbican on the horizon. A view that is constantly changing – evidenced by the construction crane in the middle ground – but fascinating to the artist for the abstract shapes it presents. One of David’s early figurative oils, its low contrast puts it in the category of ‘urban impressionism’.
